Tip: this first version works best for simple, text-based PDFs. Scanned PDFs and complex layouts are not supported yet.

Turn a PDF into an editable Word document

PDF to Word is useful when you need to edit text from a PDF in Word, Google Docs, or another word processor. Common cases include rewriting a one-page letter, updating a contract draft, copying notes into a longer document, or grabbing a passage from a clean PDF report. CalmPDF runs the entire conversion inside your browser, so your file never leaves your device.

This first version is a simple, browser-only MVP. It extracts selectable text from text-based PDFs and writes it into a DOCX file with paragraphs and page breaks. It does not perform OCR, so scanned PDFs and image-only documents are not supported yet. It also does not attempt to reconstruct columns, tables, headers, footers, footnotes, forms, or images — those are intentionally out of scope for the MVP and will be addressed in future updates.

The tool only accepts .pdf files. Conversion uses your browser's memory, so very large PDFs (hundreds of pages) may run more smoothly on a desktop or laptop than on a phone. If a conversion fails, try a smaller or simpler document.

Once you have your editable Word .docx file, you can keep working with the source PDF using CalmPDF's other browser-based tools. Add a signature, redact a section, or insert text with Edit PDF, or shrink the original before sharing it with Compress PDF. Compatible with modern Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop and mobile. Because everything happens locally, the file is never uploaded to a server and is not sent to any third-party service.

Private by design. Files stay on your device and are processed in-browser. No uploads, no account, no server-side storage.

Best for

  • Reusing text from old PDFs in new proposals.
  • Editing policy drafts originally shared as PDF.
  • Creating a starting DOCX for translation/localization.

Not ideal for

  • Best results are for simple text-first PDFs.
  • Scanned PDFs require OCR, which is not included yet.
  • Complex tables, images, and multi-column layouts may degrade.

Troubleshooting

  • If output is missing text, confirm the source PDF is selectable text.
  • If layout is rough, copy core text into a fresh Word template.
  • If conversion fails, retry with a smaller or simpler PDF first.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded?+

No. The conversion runs in your browser, so your PDF never leaves your device.

Will the Word file look exactly like the PDF?+

Not in this first version. The MVP is best for simple, text-based PDFs and may not preserve complex layouts, images, or tables.

Can it convert scanned PDFs?+

Not yet. Scanned PDFs need OCR, which is planned as a future improvement.

Can I edit the DOCX after downloading?+

Yes. The output is a Word-compatible DOCX file that can be opened in Word, Google Docs, Pages, and similar editors.

Why is my converted Word file missing tables or images?+

The current converter prioritizes text extraction. Complex elements like table structure, embedded images, and multi-column layout are not fully reconstructed in this MVP.
